Arnett Wins Individual Medal at Royal Lakes Invitational, Men's Golf Finishes 13th
Senior Jacob Arnett of the Oglethorpe men's golf team earned his second individual medal of the fall season Tuesday at the Oglethorpe-Royal Lakes Fall Invitational in Flowery Branch. He posted a 3-under-par 69 at the Royal Lakes Golf and Country Club on Tuesday, finishing the tournament at 8-under 136 to win by three strokes over Tyler Newton of York (Pennsylvania). The Stormy Petrels finished 13th as a team at the tournament, as they posted a 12-over 300 for the day and came in at 30-over 606 for the tournament. That put them 22 strokes behind a first-place tie between Babson and Greensboro. Arnett carded a pair of birdies on the back nine after teeing off for the day on the 10th hole. He played even better on the course's front nine, posting an eagle on the par-5 third and recording par on the other eight holes. Sophomore Anthony DeRosa also played well for the Petrels on the day, carding three birdies and posting 2-over 74 for the round despite suffering some bad luck over the first and last few holes of the round. He finished tied for 26th with a 4-over 148 over the 36 holes, putting him 12 strokes back of Arnett. The Petrels had several golfers compete well as individuals. That group was led by junior Ron Johnson, who posted a second straight even-par 72 to finish the tournament tied for eighth at even-par 144, eight strokes back of Arnett. Freshman Tripp Murphy and sophomore Tyler Rover finished the tournament tied for 19th at 3-over 147. Murphy posted a 2-over 74 on the day, recording a pair of eagles, while Rover came in at 1-over 73. Freshmen Isley McClure and Justin Vincent also posted scored in the top 40. McClure tied for 26th with a 4-over 76 on Tuesday and a 4-over 148 for the week, while Vincent fired a 3-over 75 on Tuesday and a 5-over 149 on the week to come in tied for 37th. Hampden-Sydney finished third as a team, coming in three strokes behind Babson and Greensboro. McDaniel, Maryville (Tennessee) and York tied for fourth at five back. LaGrange, Birmingham-Southern, Sewanee and Cal Lutheran rounded out the top 10. The Petrels will be back in action in a week's time, as they head to Ligonier, Pennsylvania, for the inaugural Tartan Invitational. That event will be held at the prestigious Laurel Valley Golf Club and will take place Monday and Tuesday. First Round Recap The Oglethorpe men's golf team enjoyed an outstanding front nine Monday at the Oglethorpe-Royal Lakes Fall Invitational in nearby Flowery Branch, posting a score of even par through 10 holes in the event's first round. However, the difficult back nine proved problematic for the Stormy Petrels, and they finished the day tied for 12th at 18-over-par 306, 15 strokes back of leaders Babson. Senior Jacob Arnett finished the day tied for first individually, as he posted an impressive 5-under 67 on the Royal Lakes Golf and Country Club course. He carded seven birdies for the round including five over the opening six holes. He sat two strokes up on Tyler Newton of York (Pennsylvania) for the lead at the end of the day. Sophomore Anthony DeRosa finished the first round tied for 25th at 2-over 74. seven strokes back of the lead, serving as one of seven Oglethorpe competitors in the top 25. Arnett and DeRosa were the only two from the Petrels' main 5-man lineup, though. Senior Kyle Shealy posted a 9-over 81, freshman Justin Rickerson came in at 12-over 84, and freshman Sean Fromme posted a 13-over 85. Freshman Isley McClure joined junior Ron Johnson in posting a top 10 score with each golfing as individuals. Each finished the day tied for ninth at even-par 72, putting them five back. Freshman Tripp Murphy posted a 1-over 73 to put himself in a tied for 15th, while sophomore Tyler Rover and freshman Justin Vincent came in tied with DeRosa for 25th. The Petrels will be back in action bright and early Tuesday morning from Flowery Branch. Johnson will be one of the first Petrels to tee off, and will get going at 8:45 a.m. The main team will get their round started at 8:54 a.m. from the 10th hole at Royal Lakes.
